The Man & The Sea

Director Andrew Kaineder creates an exhilarating portrait of one of Australia's great authentic surfers, Derek Hynd.
5th Jan 2023

Each month, we show you a short film that’s moved us beyond the day – meaningful stories that inspire us to pause, think and feel.

What does surfing teach us about what it means to be alive? For Derek Hynd, it’s a feeling of aliveness and a connectivity to nature, in this month’s #FilmClub.

Shot in winter 2015 over two weeks at Jeffrey’s Bay, Director Andrew Kaineder creates an exhilarating portrait of one of Australia’s great authentic surfers.

“Who knows why we’re here. It’s whatever turns you on. Whatever makes you happy. That’s the essence.”
