Each month, we show you a short film that’s moved us beyond the day – meaningful stories that inspire us to pause, think and feel.

gnarly bay is a production company amplifying stories for a better tomorrow. Their film, Thomas Deininger, Trash Artist, explores how the Rhode Island-based artist manages to channel his climate anxiety into fantastical sculptures that are made entirely from plastic waste. gnarly bay shares how the film came about, by chance, below.

“Early in 2019, we were searching for stories about interesting people in our area so that we could create some client-free creative profiles in our down time.

We were turned on to the work of this amazing artist named Thomas Deininger through a tweet. We were intrigued by the amazing artwork in the low quality GIF, and then, following the internet rabbit hole, we realised that he was from Rhode Island. His studio was less than an hour away…like everything in RI is, so our producer Kyle King made contact.

Tom welcomed us into his world and shared his perspectives on some big themes and how his anxieties and fears about human consumption and plastic waste create the foundation of his medium for artistic expression.”

“Our capacity for invention in acts of decency, compassion and empathy is profound.”
